Field team employee app: crews, regions, shifts, and GPS clock-in

James Dean

field team employee app — crews, shifts, GPS clock-in

Field weeks do not fail because nobody owns a van. They fail because the roster lives in a shared sheet, the punch is a text that says “on site,” the work order note is a photo in WhatsApp, and the dispatcher never saw the Saturday swap the tech lead agreed to in a side thread.

Pebb is an all-in-one employee app built for that mess — Connecteam-class ops + communications + collaboration, not an engagement pivot. You pay per person, not per van route and not per hub. Basic is $2.50 per user per month for team chat, shift scheduling, GPS clock-in, timesheets, and a directory. Premium is $4 and adds voice and video calls, a news feed, Time Off, tasks, digital forms, a wiki, analytics, and SSO. Unlimited Spaces on both plans — one Space per crew or region, one Dispatch / Managers Space for people who should see everything. Chat is org-wide outside Spaces. There is no free plan. Trial is the full product, no credit card.

This page is for 11–80 person field and mobile crews: HVAC, install, service, facilities, multi-region techs who mix trucks with a small office. It is not the construction job-site page and not the warehouse floor page — those crews have different rooms and different Mondays. If you need live GPS breadcrumbs, payroll processing, a full LMS, or a hiring ATS, say that up front — Pebb does not sell those. Keep the specialist tools for that desk. Use Pebb for the daily work: who’s on which crew, clock in near the branch or depot, tell the team without opening WhatsApp as HQ.

What field and mobile crews actually need

A field team employee app is not a second intranet for the office. It is the phone surface the tech already opens between calls.

  • Who’s on this crew or region this week — published shifts and open shifts people can pick up without a text chain when a call-out hits North Region.

  • Clock-in as a stamp, not a tracking map — GPS stamp on the punch, with optional near-branch validation so a punch from two towns over does not slide through. Not live breadcrumbs, not route replay, not telematics.

  • Talk without leaving the app — org-wide chat on Basic, calls on Premium, so WhatsApp is not the real OS for coverage and handoffs.

  • A room per crew or region — Spaces for North HVAC, South Install, Facilities East, and Dispatch. Turn on shifts, clock-in, forms, and files where that crew needs them. Spaces are unlimited — not billed hubs. Full model: What are Pebb Spaces?.

  • Forms that leave the clipboard / chat photo — job completion checks, safety acknowledgements, photo attach, submit. Premium.

  • Leave that dispatch can see — Time Off org-wide on Premium, against the roster, not trapped in a separate HR product.

That is the job. Route optimization, van inventory, and payroll are different desks. Construction maps job sites: construction crew employee app. Warehouse maps docks and exceptions: warehouse team employee app.

Why hub-priced and per-location tools frustrate field ops

Many field teams arrive with a Connecteam quote, a Homebase quote, or a WhatsApp-plus-spreadsheet stack.

Connecteam sells Operations, Communications, and HR & Skills as hubs. Past free for 10, chat / time clock / PTO often stack as hubs — Advanced is about $49 for the first 30 users per hub on annual billing. See Pebb vs Connecteam, Connecteam alternative, and Connecteam pricing hubs.

Homebase meters paid plans per location — wrong for three service regions and one office. Deputy and When I Work win on scheduler depth; richer chat often needs Messaging+ or stays in WhatsApp. Keep them for compliance or labor forecast; re-price Pebb if you bought “the employee app” and still run coverage in Messenger. Pebb’s bet: one seat count, unlimited Spaces, chat on Basic, ops next to chat. Region two is a Space, not a new SKU. WhatsApp-as-HQ depth: replace WhatsApp for work teams.

Spaces mapped to crews and regions

Think in rooms that match how you dispatch — not construction pours, not warehouse floors.

  • North HVAC / Service — shifts, clock-in, forms, files for that crew only.

  • South Install — same tools, different member list. The North closer does not drown in South posts.

  • Facilities East — multi-building maintenance with its own week and punch surface.

  • Dispatch / Managers — feed, private files, coverage planning without the whole tech group in the thread.

  • Everyone (optional) — policies, safety handbook wiki links, events.

People only see Spaces they belong to. Chat stays org-wide outside Spaces. Time Off stays org-wide on Premium, so leave does not get stuck inside North HVAC’s room. Turn tools on per Space — a quiet Facilities room does not need the same surface as Dispatch. Walkthrough: What are Pebb Spaces?.

A week on a field team in Pebb

Monday dispatch publishes next week’s roster into two region Spaces; open shifts sit for pickup. Tuesday the HVAC lead clocks in near the depot with a GPS stamp and optional near-branch check — proof at the place, not a breadcrumb trail. Wednesday a Premium job-completion form goes out in South Install — photos, submit. Thursday Time Off on Premium shows against both rosters. Friday timesheets close toward payroll; a Premium supervisor can call from the thread on a parts delay. Coverage talk sits beside the week it is about.

Pricing for an 11–80 person field or service company

USD. No free plan. Full trial, no card.

  • 10 people: Basic $25/mo. Premium $40/mo.

  • 25 people: Basic $62.50/mo. Premium $100/mo.

  • 40 people: Basic $100/mo. Premium $160/mo.

Spaces do not change those numbers. Five regions or one — same seat count. Details on Pebb pricing.

Basic is enough for org-wide chat, shifts, GPS clock-in, timesheets, and a directory. Premium for calls, news feed, PTO, tasks, forms, wiki, analytics, and SSO. Buy Premium for the form checklist and the leave desk — not a slogan. Roster siblings: best shift scheduling app for small teams · staff rota app. Punch: employee clock-in app · GPS time clock app.

Honest limits (read these before you switch)

  • No payroll. Timesheets leave the building. Payroll stays payroll.

  • No LMS and no hiring ATS. If courses and recruiting pipelines are load-bearing, keep your training stack. See the Connecteam alternative for when to stay.

  • GPS is a stamp, not a map of the afternoon. Clock-in can GPS-stamp and optionally require near a branch — not live breadcrumbs, van telematics, or customer-arrival ETAs.

  • Offline does not fully work. Mobile needs a connection. Basements and rural dead zones are a real reason to keep a tool that caches a full shift.

  • Not construction pours, not warehouse docks. Different Space maps — use construction and warehouse when those are the ICP.

  • Not an engagement pivot. Connecteam-class daily ops + communications + collaboration.

  • No fake “#1 field app” awards on this page. Judge the trial on your crews.

Setup without a six-week IT project

Create a workspace. Invite with a link — phones first. Make a Space per crew or region; put shifts and clock-in on the floor Spaces; make a Dispatch / Managers Space for people who should see everything. Chat is already org-wide.

Run one week in parallel with WhatsApp muted for that crew if the ops lead agrees. Expand Space by Space when North works — do not rip three tools mid-service week. Trial is the full product, no credit card. Start on one region. Prove the closer saw the swap. Then open South.

Who should not use Pebb for field teams

Stay if you are under 10 on a free all-hubs plan that covers you; if live GPS breadcrumbs, a large geofence library, or full offline clock-in are non-negotiable; if LMS/ATS are load-bearing and you will not keep a separate training desk; if chat is already solved and you only need a compliance scheduler; or if your ICP is really a fixed job site or warehouse floor.

Everyone else running WhatsApp as the field office — with a sheet or PDF publishing into the void — should price Basic or Premium for the same headcount before renewal. Related: security · nonprofit.

FAQ

Is Pebb a field-only app?

No. Field / mobile service is a primary beachhead — HVAC, install, facilities, multi-region techs — alongside construction, warehouse, security, hospitality, and multi-location ops. Same employee app.

How is this different from the construction crew page?

Construction maps Spaces to job sites. This page maps Spaces to crews and regions — vans, depots, service territories. Same product; different Monday.

Do we pay per region or per van?

No. You pay per user. Crews and regions are Spaces — unlimited on Basic and Premium.

Does GPS mean we track techs all day?

No. Punch can carry a GPS stamp and optional near-branch check. Not live tracking.

Will it work in a basement or rural dead zone?

Not fully. Mobile needs a connection. If that is a deal-breaker, stay on a product with full offline shift cache.

Does Pebb replace our payroll?

No. Export timesheets. Payroll stays payroll.

Basic or Premium for a service company with two regions?

Chat, shifts, clock-in, timesheets → Basic. Forms, PTO, calls, wiki, tasks → Premium. Two regions are two Spaces; the meter does not change.

One app for the crew — not a sheet, a punch text, and a group chat

Twenty-five people. Two regions. One price. Chat that isn’t a hub. Stamp at the depot — not a tracking map.
