Employee Clock-In App: GPS Time Clock Without Fake Tracking

A clock in app (or time clock app) for a small frontline team should answer one question cleanly: did this person punch at the right place for this shift? Most stacks fail that job by splitting the roster, the punch, and the coverage chat across three tabs — then selling “GPS tracking” when buyers only needed a stamp.

Pebb is an all-in-one employee app where clock-in sits next to shifts and org-wide chat. Basic is $2.50 per user per month for team chat, shift scheduling, GPS clock-in, timesheets, and a directory. Premium is $4 and adds calls, a news feed, Time Off, tasks, forms, a wiki, analytics, and SSO. Spaces are unlimited on both plans — not billed hubs. Chat is org-wide outside Spaces. There is no free plan. Trial is the full product, no credit card. GPS on the punch is a stamp ± optional near-branch check — not live breadcrumbs. No payroll, LMS, or ATS.

This page is for 11–80 person construction, field, security, warehouse, multi-location, and hospitality/retail floors that mix frontline staff with a small office. If you need live tracking maps, full offline punches, or a paycheck engine, keep those specialists. Use Pebb for the daily surface: who’s on, clock in, talk about coverage, export the week.

What a small team actually needs from a time clock app

For this ICP, a time clock is not a telematics product and not a payroll suite. It is the mobile punch the crew already lives on between jobs, docks, and posts.

  • Punch next to the roster — same login as shifts and open shifts, so “who’s on” and “who punched” do not diverge. Sibling guide: Best shift scheduling app for small teams.

  • Proof they were near the place — a GPS stamp on the punch, with optional near-branch validation so a punch from two towns over does not slide through.

  • Timesheets that leave for payroll — close the week, export, keep payroll as payroll.

  • Talk without leaving the app — org-wide chat on Basic so coverage gaps and late reliefs are not WhatsApp-only.

  • A room per site, floor, or crew — Spaces for Site A, Floor B, and Supervisors. Turn clock-in and shifts on where that crew needs them. Unlimited — not location SKUs. More: What are Pebb Spaces?.

  • Leave visible to the scheduler — Time Off on Premium against the roster, not trapped in a separate HR tab.

That is the job. Live breadcrumb maps, biometric kiosks, and wage-rule engines are different jobs. Pebb does not pretend otherwise.

GPS stamp vs live breadcrumbs (read this before you buy “GPS time clock”)

Search copy loves the phrase GPS time clock. Two products hide behind it.

GPS stamp (what Pebb does): when someone clocks in or out, the punch can carry a location stamp. You can optionally require the phone to be near a branch or site you configured. You get “they punched here at this time” — enough for most warehouses, job sites, multi-gate posts, and café floors that need fraud resistance without a tracking platform.

Live breadcrumbs (what Pebb does not do): continuous location samples plotted on a map through the shift — telematics-style trails, large geofence libraries, guard-tour checkpoint trails. Useful for some security and fleet desks. Not what Pebb sells. If that map is non-negotiable, keep a specialist tracker and use Pebb for roster, chat, and the punch stamp.

Buyers get burned when a clock stamp is pitched as “we track the whole shift.” We will not do that on this page. Same honesty on construction, warehouse, and security verticals.

Timesheets → payroll (honest handoff)

Pebb includes timesheets and reports on Basic. The week closes in the same app as the punches and the roster. Then timesheets leave the building.

  • Pebb does not run payroll. No tax filing, no direct deposit, no paycheck engine.

  • Keep your payroll product (or accountant workflow) as the system of record for wages.

  • Export or hand off timesheets; do not expect Pebb to replace Gusto, ADP, Rippling, or a local bureau.

  • No LMS and no hiring ATS either — training courses and recruiting pipelines stay on specialist desks.

If a competitor quote bundles “payroll” as the reason you opened the app, price that desk separately. Pebb’s bet is the employee surface — punch, schedule, chat, Spaces — at a per-user meter you can forecast.

How Pebb clock-in fits the all-in-one employee app

Clock-in is not a bolt-on SKU and not a separate attendance hub. On Basic you already get chat, shifts, clock-in, timesheets, and a directory. On Premium you add calls, news feed, Time Off, tasks, forms, wiki, analytics, and SSO — still one seat price.

A typical week:

Monday — ops lead publishes next week’s roster into site or floor Spaces; open shifts sit for pickup.
Tuesday — crew clocks in with a GPS stamp; near-branch validation on for the north site Space.
Wednesday — a late relief hits; coverage talk stays in org-wide chat or the site Space, not a private Messenger thread.
Thursday — Premium Time Off shows against the roster so leave does not double-book a punched shift.
Friday — timesheets close toward payroll export; the closer sees the same week the manager published.

Spaces map the rooms: Site A / Floor Outbound / Supervisors. People only see Spaces they belong to. Chat stays org-wide outside Spaces. Full model: What are Pebb Spaces?.

Honest comparison: Connecteam, Homebase, Deputy, When I Work

None are “bad” — they win different desks. Frame the punch inside the product you are actually buying.

Connecteam — hub-priced all-in-one

Time clock often lives in an Operations hub while chat and PTO sit elsewhere; past free-for-10, Advanced hub pricing stacks. Re-price against seats if punch forces a second or third hub. Pebb vs Connecteam · Connecteam alternative · Connecteam pricing hubs.

Homebase — hourly shops, per-location paid plans

Strong on café/retail floors. Per-location metering taxes multi-site operators who are one headcount. Pick Homebase for one door + POS-native punch; compare Pebb when site two should be a Space and punch must sit next to org-wide chat. Pebb vs Homebase · Homebase alternative.

Deputy — compliance scheduler; chat often Messaging+

Award rules and forecasting are the strength; coverage talk often stays in WhatsApp or needs Messaging+. Pick Deputy for compliance depth; Pebb for punch + roster + talk in one place. Pebb vs Deputy · Deputy alternative.

When I Work — scheduler-first; attendance often a pricing toggle

Built around the roster; messaging is schedule-adjacent. Re-check their live pricing for attendance. Pick When I Work for labor/OpenShifts depth; Pebb when clock-in should sit on Basic beside Spaces and org-wide chat. Pebb vs When I Work.

Basic is enough for chat, shifts, clock-in, timesheets, and a directory. Premium when you also need calls, PTO, forms, tasks, wiki, analytics, or SSO. When you model competitors, add every hub, location, Messaging+, or attendance toggle required for punch + chat + leave — that all-in number is what you compare to Pebb seats.

Honest limits (read before you switch)

  • No free plan. Budget Basic or Premium; use the full trial (no card) to prove punches on one crew.

  • No payroll, LMS, or ATS. Timesheets leave; training and hiring stay specialist.

  • GPS is a stamp, not a tracking map. Optional near-branch — not live breadcrumbs, not telematics, not guard-tour NFC trails.

  • Offline is not full. Mobile needs a connection. Deep aisles, metal buildings, and dead zones are a real reason to keep a tool that caches a full shift.

  • Not a biometric kiosk platform. Phones and the employee app are the surface.

  • No fake #1 awards, 10k-customer claims, or review-score theater on this page. Run the trial on your sites.
